The village itself is just off the old trade route to the provincial capital of Granada, 60 km away. The "Camino de las Cabras", as the old street is still called, leads over a breathtaking pass directly into the former Moorish royal city. In the other direction you can reach the sea and the town of Almunecar, 13 km away. The old village is located on a hillside overlooking the beautiful valley through which flows the Rio Verde. If you go through the narrow steep streets, you feel transported to another world.
There is a selection of good pubs and nice bars with simple, regional cuisine that are well-attended by the locals. A church, pharmacy, post office, bank and a bakery, which brings the rolls still on the doorstep, one finds scattered in the village, as well as small grocery stores. A bus runs between Granada and Almunecar. Each village in the area has its own small fine swimming pool, each in a beautiful location.
The area around Otívar offers ideal conditions for hiking, bird watching and paragliding. Cyclists will appreciate the breathtaking landscape from the rarely frequented route between Otívar and Granada. On the nearby coast you can hike, dive, swim or kayak in a calm sea, or overlook the sea fron a street cafe.
